Black Ohioans Build Communities Despite Restrictive Black Laws

Ohio passed restrictive Black Laws in 1804 requiring free Black migrants to post bond and limiting their legal rights, yet free Black Ohioans nonetheless established churches, schools, and mutual aid networks in towns like Cincinnati and Chillicothe. Their community-building in the face of legal discrimination demonstrated determination to create viable institutions in the Northwest Territory.
