Paul Laurence Dunbar publishes Lyrics of Lowly Life

Dunbar's collection, introduced by William Dean Howells in the Atlantic Monthly, made him the first Black poet to achieve national fame and readership in the United States. His mastery of both standard English verse and Black vernacular dialect opened the door for every subsequent generation of Black American poets.
