Peter Williams Sr. Helps Establish African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in New York

Peter Williams Sr., a formerly enslaved man who had purchased his own freedom, was a founding figure of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in New York City. The church provided an independent Black religious institution in the city, free from white Methodist oversight, and became a cornerstone of Black community life in New York.
