Philadelphia African School Opens

The Philadelphia African School, supported by the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and the Black community, opened to provide formal education to free Black children in Philadelphia. It was among the first institutions dedicated to Black education in a major American city and helped lay the foundation for a literate, organized free Black community in the North.
