Philadelphia's Free Black Community Reaches 6,000 — Largest in the Nation

The 1800 census confirmed that Philadelphia had the largest urban free Black population in the United States, with over 6,000 free Black residents. This community sustained independent churches, mutual aid societies, schools, and a growing class of Black tradespeople, professionals, and entrepreneurs. Philadelphia became the center of organized Black civic and abolitionist life in the early republic.
