Prince Hall Masonic Lodges Emerge as Reconstruction's Economic and Political Networks

Following emancipation, Prince Hall Masonic lodges expand rapidly across the South, providing Black men with organizational infrastructure for political action, mutual aid, and business networks. By 1900, lodges in every Southern state were coordinating voter registration, legal defense funds, and community investment — functioning as a shadow civic infrastructure during the collapse of Reconstruction.
