Prince Hall's African Lodge Receives Formal Massachusetts Charter

Prince Hall, a free Black Bostonian who had been initiated into a British military lodge in 1775, received a formal charter establishing African Lodge No. 459 under the Prince Hall Masonic tradition. By 1797 the lodge was independently chartered in Massachusetts, founding a network of Black Masonic lodges that spread across the United States as a cornerstone of Black fraternal life.
