Quock Walker Case Effectively Ends Slavery in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in Commonwealth v. Jennison ruled in 1783 that slavery was incompatible with the 1780 Massachusetts Constitution's declaration that 'all men are born free and equal.' The decision freed Quock Walker and effectively ended legal slavery in Massachusetts, the first such ruling in American history.
