Ralph Ellison wins National Book Award for Invisible Man

Ellison's novel, following an unnamed Black narrator through a surrealist journey from the South to Harlem, won the National Book Award and was later voted by a panel of critics as the best American novel of the postwar era. It introduced the metaphor of invisibility into the American cultural vocabulary in a way that resonated far beyond literature.
