Rebecca Lee Crumpler publishes first medical book by a Black American

Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States (1864), published 'A Book of Medical Discourses' in 1883 — the first medical text authored by a Black American. The book focused on the health of women and children and drew on her work treating freed people in Richmond, Virginia after the Civil War.
