Richard Allen and Absalom Jones Publish Abolitionist Sermons and Pamphlets

Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, the two most prominent Black religious leaders in Philadelphia, published sermons and addresses in the early 1800s arguing against slavery and for the dignity and citizenship of Black Americans. Their writings circulated among free Black communities and white allies, establishing a tradition of Black intellectual abolitionism at a time when few Black-authored texts reached wide audiences.
