Richard Allen Publishes Address Opposing American Colonization Society

In 1827 Bishop Richard Allen published an open letter in Freedom's Journal declaring his opposition to the American Colonization Society and asserting that Black Americans, having built the nation through enslaved labor, had a birthright claim to remain in the United States. The letter reinforced the Black anti-colonization consensus and shaped generations of civil rights argument.
