Richard Allen Dies Leaving the AME Church with 10,000 Members

Richard Allen, founder and first bishop of the AME Church, died in Philadelphia on March 26, 1831. Under his leadership the denomination had grown from a single congregation to over 10,000 members and dozens of churches across the northeastern United States and into Canada, establishing the most powerful Black institution in early America.
