Richard R. Wright Sr. Leads Augusta's Black Schools — 'We Are Rising'

Richard Robert Wright Sr., born enslaved, became principal of Augusta's Ware High School in 1876 — a model Black institution — at age 21. When President Grant asked if he had a message for the North, the young Wright replied 'Tell them we are rising.' He later founded the Georgia State Industrial College and was a pioneering Black educator and banker.
