Romare Bearden debuts his revolutionary photomontage collages
In 1964, Romare Bearden created his landmark Projections series of photomontage collages depicting Black urban and Southern life, transforming the medium into a vehicle for exploring African American experience and memory. These works, exhibited in New York, established Bearden as one of America's most important visual artists and introduced an entirely new visual language drawing on African masks, jazz, and everyday Black life.
