Samuel Ringgold Ward Rises as Powerful Abolitionist Orator
Samuel Ringgold Ward, born into slavery in Maryland and escaped north as an infant, emerged in the 1840s as one of the most gifted orators of the abolitionist movement, known for his commanding presence and incisive arguments for Black freedom and equality. Frederick Douglass himself declared Ward the greatest orator of the age, noting his powerful voice and brilliant rhetorical skill. Ward organized for the Liberty Party, edited abolitionist newspapers, and later helped found the Anti-Slavery Society of Canada after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act forced him into exile.
