Shirley Ann Jackson earns first Black woman PhD in physics from MIT
Shirley Ann Jackson became the first Black woman to earn a PhD from MIT and the first to earn one in theoretical physics from any American university. She went on to conduct fundamental research on subatomic particles at Bell Labs, later became chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and served as president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
