Sonia Sanchez publishes Homecoming

Sanchez's debut collection introduced a radical new poetic voice that fused jazz rhythms, Black vernacular, and political militancy. She became a founding figure of the Black Arts Movement and, decades later, the first Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, influencing spoken-word and hip-hop artists across generations.
