Trans-Saharan Trade Reaches Its Peak Under Songhai
Under Askia Muhammad, the Songhai Empire facilitates the largest volume of trans-Saharan trade in history. Timbuktu becomes the nexus where gold and kola nuts from the south meet salt from Taghaza and goods from North Africa and the Mediterranean. Scholars estimate the empire controls roughly 25% of the world's gold supply during this period.
