Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise fists on the Olympic podium

After winning gold and bronze in the 200 meters at the Mexico City Olympics, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists on the podium in a Black Power salute during the national anthem, protesting racial injustice in America. The image became one of the most iconic and controversial photographs of the twentieth century.
