Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute Founded by Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1881 with $2,000 and no land or buildings. By 1900 the campus encompassed 2,300 acres, 66 student-built buildings, and an endowment over $1 million. Tuskegee trained thousands of Black teachers and skilled workers in a state where Black education had been criminalized.
