Tyler Perry Studios opens on historic Fort McPherson — first major studio owned by a Black person

Tyler Perry opened his 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta on October 5, 2019, on the grounds of the former Fort McPherson military base — land that once held Confederate soldiers. The first major film and television studio in America owned outright by a Black person, it includes 12 sound stages and full production infrastructure, representing total vertical control of Black storytelling.
