W.E.B. Du Bois Earns Harvard PhD
W.E.B. Du Bois became the first Black American to earn a PhD from Harvard University, with a dissertation titled 'The Suppression of the African Slave-Trade to the United States of America, 1638–1870.' The dissertation was published as the first volume in the Harvard Historical Studies series, an unprecedented honor. Du Bois would go on to co-found the NAACP and become the most influential Black intellectual of the twentieth century.
