W.C. Handy Publishes 'St. Louis Blues,' Defining American Popular Music

W.C. Handy published 'St. Louis Blues' in September 1914, one of the most recorded and performed songs in American music history. Building on the blues tradition he had documented from Mississippi Delta musicians, Handy's compositions established the blues form in popular consciousness and laid groundwork for jazz, R&B, and rock and roll.
