William Wells Brown Publishes Clotel — First Novel by a Black American

William Wells Brown, formerly enslaved, published Clotel; or, The President's Daughter in London, becoming the first novel written by an African American. Already a celebrated abolitionist speaker and memoirist, Brown demonstrated that Black writers could produce sustained literary fiction, opening a path for generations of novelists.
