Zora Neale Hurston Publishes "Their Eyes Were Watching God"

Hurston published her landmark novel depicting the life and self-determination of a Black Southern woman, drawing on her anthropological fieldwork and her deep knowledge of African American vernacular and folk culture. Though initially controversial among some Harlem Renaissance peers, it is now recognized as one of the most important American novels of the twentieth century.
