Denmark Vesey

A free Black carpenter in Charleston who planned one of the most sweeping slave-revolt conspiracies in U.S. history before it was betrayed in 1822.

A leader within the [[slave-rebellions]] thread.

Denmark Vesey won a lottery, bought his freedom, and built a life as a respected carpenter and church leader in Charleston — but he never accepted the slavery around him. In 1822 he was accused of organizing an elaborate plot to seize the city and free its enslaved population.

The conspiracy was exposed before it began; Vesey and dozens of others were executed. In its wake, Charleston authorities tore down the African Methodist church he had helped lead and tightened the screws on the city's Black residents.
