Early Underground Railroad Networks Form

Following the 1793 Fugitive Slave Act, networks of free Black people, Quakers, and allies organized to shelter freedom-seekers. Philadelphia's Free African Society, founded by Richard Allen and Absalom Jones in 1787, became an early node. Networks were largely organized by free and formerly enslaved Black people.
