Illegal Slave Imports Continue After 1808 Ban

Despite the 1808 federal ban, illegal slave importation continued throughout the antebellum period. Enforcement was minimal — the Navy's Africa Squadron was consistently underfunded. Historians estimate that 50,000–60,000 Africans were illegally imported between 1808 and 1860. The ban was not backed by the death penalty until 1820, and even then prosecutions were rare and convictions rarer. The law functioned more as symbolic gesture than meaningful enforcement.
