Illegal Slave Imports Continue After 1808 Ban

Despite the 1808 federal ban, illegal importation continued through the 1860s. The Navy's Africa Squadron was consistently underfunded. Historians estimate 50,000–60,000 Africans were illegally imported after 1808. The death penalty was not added until 1820 and prosecutions remained rare.
