Black Sailors Impressed into British Royal Navy

As the War of 1812 begins, the Royal Navy's practice of impressment falls heavily on Black American sailors. Hundreds of free Black men serving on US merchant and naval vessels are seized and forced into British service. The US government, preoccupied with defending enslaved property interests, offers them little protection or diplomatic redress.
