Black Men Serve in the War of 1812

Thousands of free Black men enlist in the US military during the War of 1812 despite pervasive discrimination. They serve in segregated units on land and alongside white sailors at sea. Their service is motivated partly by hope that military sacrifice will compel the nation to honor its founding promises — a hope repeatedly betrayed.
