Black Troops Fight at New Orleans; Jackson Betrays Them
Andrew Jackson recruits two battalions of free Black soldiers — about 600 men — promising equal pay and land bounties. They fight with distinction at the Battle of New Orleans, Jan 8, 1815. Afterward Jackson reneges: Black troops receive less pay, no land grants, and are mustered out with contempt. Jackson later becomes a brutal enslaver and Indian-removal president.
