Missouri Compromise: Slavery's Geography Negotiated

After bitter debate, Congress admits Missouri as a slave state and Maine as free, while banning slavery north of 36°30' in the Louisiana Territory. Congressman James Tallmadge of NY had proposed gradual emancipation in Missouri — triggering Southern fury. Henry Clay brokered the compromise. Thomas Jefferson called it "a fire bell in the night." It extended slavery's legal domain westward.
