First Black National Convention Meets in Philadelphia

The first National Negro Convention meets in Philadelphia in September 1830, convened by Bishop Richard Allen. Forty delegates from eight states debate emigration to Canada, boycotts of slave-produced goods, moral reform, and political strategies. The convention movement continues annually through the antebellum period, forming a sustained Black political institution.
