William Lloyd Garrison Founds The Liberator
William Lloyd Garrison publishes the first issue of The Liberator on January 1, 1831, demanding immediate unconditional abolition. "I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch — AND I WILL BE HEARD." Though white-led, the paper depends heavily on Black subscribers and reporters. Southern states put bounties on Garrison's head.
