White Militias Kill 200+ Black People in Turner's Wake

In the days and weeks following Nat Turner's rebellion, white militia units and mobs across Virginia and North Carolina massacre an estimated 200 or more Black people — most of them entirely uninvolved in the revolt. Decapitated heads were mounted on poles as terror displays. The indiscriminate slaughter reveals that white Southerners saw all Black people as collective enemies.
