North Carolina Bans Teaching Black People to Read

North Carolina enacts a law in November 1831 making it a criminal offense to teach any free Black person or enslaved person to read or write, punishable by fine and imprisonment for white offenders and whipping for Black offenders. The law explicitly cites fears of insurrection spread through written communication. Similar laws followed across the South within two years.
