Ahmaud Arbery Chased and Killed by Three White Men While Jogging
Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging near his home in Brunswick, GA, when Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan pursued him in pickup trucks. Travis McMichael shot Arbery three times with a shotgun at close range. The McMichaels claimed citizen's arrest; local prosecutors initially declined to charge them. Video of the killing shot by Bryan was leaked on May 5, 2020, provoking national outrage. All three men were arrested May 7, 2020 — 74 days after the killing. They were convicted of murder in November 2021 and sentenced to life in prison. Federal hate crime convictions followed in 2022.
