Kingdom of Benin Resists Portuguese Slave Trade Expansion

The Oba (king) of Benin in present-day Nigeria restricted Portuguese slave-trading activities in his kingdom, refusing to allow large-scale export of male slaves from Benin territory. This represented one of the earliest documented instances of an African state exercising sovereign authority to limit the Atlantic slave trade. Benin continued trading, but on its own terms, demonstrating that some African rulers actively resisted rather than simply accommodated European slavers.
