Black Codes Spread Across the South

Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, and other former Confederate states passed Black Code variants through late 1865 and early 1866. Louisiana's code required written labor contracts and bound workers to plantations for a year. South Carolina barred Black people from any trade except farming or domestic service without a license. The codes effectively recreated slavery's labor conditions under state law.
