Black Educators and Ministers Targeted for Political Organizing

Black teachers, ministers, and community leaders who organize voter registration, challenge labor conditions, or speak publicly against lynching face dismissal, assault, and murder throughout the 1880s. State education boards dismiss Black teachers who discuss politics. Congregations whose ministers speak about rights lose their buildings. The pattern of targeting community leadership is a deliberate strategy to decapitate Black political life.
