Southern States Disband and Disarm Black Militia Units

Throughout the 1880s, Southern state governments systematically disband Black militia companies that had been organized during Reconstruction, confiscate their weapons and equipment, and pass laws restricting Black access to firearms. White militia and rifle clubs that participated in Reconstruction-era massacres are simultaneously reorganized and equipped. The disarmament removes the last institutional capacity for Black self-defense against mob violence.
