Stokely Carmichael Declares 'Black Power' in Greenwood
SNCC chairman Stokely Carmichael, arrested for the 27th time while on the Meredith March in Greenwood, Mississippi, told the crowd: 'We been saying freedom for six years and we ain't got nothin'. What we gonna start saying now is Black Power!' The crowd took up the chant. The phrase ignited a national debate on the direction of the movement.
