Black Literacy Rises to 20%, Property Ownership Grows Despite Terror

Despite systematic violence and land denial, Black Southerners made measurable gains during Reconstruction. Black literacy rose from ~5% at emancipation to over 20% by 1880. Black property ownership grew in states where Reconstruction governments provided security. These gains made Reconstruction's collapse doubly catastrophic — demonstrating what was possible while documenting what white supremacist violence deliberately destroyed.
