Over 50 All-Black Towns Incorporated in Oklahoma Territory

Between 1865 and 1920, over 50 all-Black incorporated towns were established in Oklahoma and Indian Territory, more than any other state. Towns like Boley, Langston, and Taft had their own governments, schools, newspapers, and businesses. The towns represented an experiment in Black self-governance and economic self-sufficiency under conditions of extreme external hostility.
