Over 50 All-Black Towns Incorporated in Oklahoma Territory, Building Self-Governance Models
Between 1865 and 1920, over 50 all-Black incorporated towns were established in Oklahoma and Indian Territory, more than any other state. Towns like Boley, Langston, Taft, and Rentiesville had their own governments, schools, newspapers, and businesses, entirely administered by Black officials. The towns represented an experiment in Black self-governance and economic self-sufficiency under conditions of extreme external hostility. Boley's founding was deliberately designed as proof that Black communities could govern themselves and prosper without white oversight.
