700,000 Black Men Register to Vote Across the South

Under the Reconstruction Acts, approximately 703,000 Black men registered to vote across ten former Confederate states in 1867, often outnumbering white registered voters in South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. Black veterans, ministers, and Union League organizers drove registration drives. The organized political mobilization of formerly enslaved people represented an unprecedented democratic transformation.
