Klan Bombs Buses and Churches After Montgomery Bus Desegregation Order
After the Supreme Court orders Montgomery bus desegregation effective December 21, 1956, Klan and White Citizens Council members conduct a terror campaign: snipers shoot at buses, injuring a pregnant woman; homes and churches are bombed; Reverend Ralph Abernathy's church and home are bombed. Montgomery police stand by during bombings. Bus service is suspended multiple times. The violence is designed to make the cost of desegregation so high that Black residents will accept re-segregation.
