Carrollton Courthouse Massacre 1886: 20+ Killed

On March 17, 1886, a mob of approximately 50 white men entered the Carroll County courthouse in Carrollton, Mississippi, and opened fire on Black men gathered for a minor hearing, killing at least 20 and wounding many more. Victims included bystanders and witnesses. No one was prosecuted. The massacre was designed to suppress Black political organization in a majority-Black county.
